[Also in Divisions B8 and F2] The tubular body of a container comprises a metal foil 21 (tin or aluminium) adhering to a thermoplastics tube 20 which may be of olefin polymers and copolymers such as the polyethylenes, polypropylene and ethylene-propylene copolymers, styrene polymers and copolymers; polyvinyl chloride, polycarbonates, polyamides such as nylon and cellulose acetate; or an ionomeric resin containing metal ions and carboxyl groups. The foil may be heated to soften the surface of the tube on application and achieve adhesion or the foil may be provided with a heat-curable adhesive such as an epoxy resin. The foil may have a paper backing and a transparent protective coating. The tube 20 may itself be of multi-ply construction formed by extruding a thermoplastics tube, and extruding a second tube therearound (Fig. 4, not shown). Preferably the first tube is subjected to a corona discharge treatment to assist in obtaining a good bond with the subsequently extruded tube. |
