PURPOSE:To decrease the generation of a gaseous hydrochloric acid from a magnetic layer by forming a binder of a resin component contg. a vinyl chloride copolymer having a prescribed compsn. and polyurethane resin having a prescribed compsn. CONSTITUTION:This magnetic recording medium contains a nonmagnetic substrate and the magnetic layer which is provided on the substrate and is formed by dispersing ferromagnetic powder into the binder. The binder consists of the resin component contg. the vinyl chloride copolymer contg. the repeating unit having at least one kind of polar group selected from the group consisting of -SO3M, -OSO3M, -COOM, -PO(OM')2 and repeating unit having an epoxy group and the polyurethane resin contg. the repeating unit having at least one kind of the polar group selected from the group consisting of -SO3M, -OSO3M, -COOM, -PO(OM')2. In the formulas, M is a hydrogen atom or alkali metal atom, M' is hydrogen or alkali metal or lower hydrocarbon group.
