PURPOSE:To always receive and accumulate paper sheets stably irrespective of the accumulated amount of the paper sheets to aim at enhancing the performance of accumulation of paper sheets, by detecting the uppermost surface of stacked paper sheets stored in a storage section, and by moving paper sheet accumulating members in the storage section in accordance with the thus detected signal. CONSTITUTION:Banknotes B released from an impeller 20 are accumulated on a press plate 29 as an accumulating member in the storage section. The press plate 29 ascends until a photosensor 60 is turned on before start of receiving operation, and is lowered down to a predetermined position after the initial position of the press plate being set. In this condition the impeller is rotated, and therefore, the banknotes are accumulated successively onto the press plate 29. Further, when the uppermost surface of he banknotes B is detected by the photosensor 60 which is therefore turned on, a drive motor 33 is driven in accordance with a signal from the photosensor 60 to lower the press plate 29 by a predetermined distance. With this arrangement, a space is always held between the impeller and the banknotes, and therefore, no inferior accumulation occurs, thereby it is possible to enhance the performance of accumulation.
