The apparatus for determining particularly the weight of a melt in a casting vessel (9) has a weighing apparatus, in which the balance beam (5) is supported on a load pick-up, for example a measuring cell (15). The balance beam (5) is connected to a linkage (7) which has a receptacle for a casting vessel (9), as a result of which the casting vessel (9) can be pivoted, by means of sliding-piston drives (11, 14), on the one hand under a smelting vessel (10) and on the other hand, for the casting operation, above a casting mould (13). A damping element (22) is inserted between the balance beam (5) and the load pick-up (15) in order to prevent the maximum load-bearing capacity of the load pick-up (15) from being exceeded. A displacement limiter (23) prevents the maximum operating displacement of the damping element (22) and of the load pick-up (15) from being exceeded by the operating displacement of the balance beam (5). <IMAGE>
