PURPOSE:To produce a cathode for electrolysis which has the small hydrogen overvoltage of the cathode and excellent efficiency of the electric power for electrolysis by depositing a stainless steel, Ni, Ni alloy, etc., on the surface of a conductive electrode base body as the cathode to be used in the stage of electrolyzing water and alkali metal halide. CONSTITUTION:An alkaline resistant metal such as SUS304, SUS316, SUS310S, Ni, 'InconelR', 'HastelloyR' or 'MonelR' is arc sprayed on the surface of the conductive metallic base body such as punching metal, expanded metal or wire net consisting of a stainless steel, Ni, Ni alloy, etc., and such base body is used as the cathode to be used in an electrolytic cell in the stage of electrolyz ing water or aq. solns. of alkali metal halides such as NaCl. The thermally sprayed film having many pieces of ruggedness is deposited to 20-50mum thick ness on the surface of the electrode base body.
