PURPOSE:To obtain inexpensively a linear aromatic poly(thio)ether ketone of high degree of polymerization, by reacting an aromatic (thio)ether with phosgene in the presence of a Lewis acid in 1,2-dichloroethane as a solvent and specifying the ratio of the phosgene to the Lewis acid in the reaction. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic (thio)ether of formula I (wherein F<1>-R<12> are each H, a halogen, a hydrocarbon group or an alkoxy group, X is O or S, part of X may be direct bonds and n is an integer of 0-2) is reacted with phosgene in the presence of a Lewis acid to produce a linear high-polymerization degree aromatic poly(thio)ether ketone of formula II (where in R<1>-R<12>, X and n are as defined above). In this reaction, 1,2-dichloroethane is used as a solvent, and the amount of the phosgene and that of the Lewis acid are such that the molar ratios to the aromatic (thio)ether of formula I are 8-20 and 1.9-10.0, respectively. As the Lewis acid, anhydrous aluminum trichloride is desirable, and it is used in an amount to provide a molar ratio to the phosgene of, preferably, 1.0 or below.
