PURPOSE:To prevent paper sheets from dropping into a conveying section when a guide is opened, by forming a paper sheet retaining means on a paper sheet conveyance guide securing latch, commonly with the latter. CONSTITUTION:If a paper jam or the like occurs, when an upper guide 7 is opened, a latch 8 which is common with a latch handle section 8a also serving as a paper retainer, is released by lightly pressing the upper guide. This latch 8 is rotated toward the hopper side under the action of a spring, and the handle section 8a retains paper sheets 2. At this time a feed roller 10 and a reverse roller 11 are still made into contact with each other, and therefore, the sheets are fixed to the hopper without being moved. Accordingly, even if the paper jam is removed after the guide 7 being opened, the paper sheets 2 set on the hopper are prevented from dropping into the conveying section. Accordingly, it is possible to eliminate the step of resetting the sheets and so forth.
