<p>A polymerizable dental composition having an accelerated curing rate comprising at least one methacrylate monomer having 2 to 4 polymerizable double bonds, from about 0 to 400% based on said monomer of inorganic particulate filler, from about 0 to 5% based on said monomer of silane coupling agent, an effective catalyst - activating amount of accelerator comprising cupric ion and from about 0.5 to 5.0% based on said monomer of compound selected from (a) free radical liberating polymerization catalyst comprising an organic peroxy compound (b) reducing agent for said peroxy compound and (c) mixtures of (a) and (b), and wherein the concentration of (b) does not exceed about 40% of the total quantity of (a) and (b). The degree and rate of cure of said filled and unfilled polymerizable dental compositions containing said methacrylate monomer such as bis glycidyl methacrylate (BIS-GMA) and one or more components of a redox polymerization catalyst system are improved by including therein an effective catalyst activating (accelerating) amount of cupric ion.</p> |
