PURPOSE:To obtain a rewritable optical recording consisting of an oxide having high absorptivity to semiconductor laser light and the grain size smaller than the diameter of a recording spot by forming a layer consisting of an Ag-Zn alloy on a substrate then heating the layer in air thereby providing an oxide layer thereon. CONSTITUTION:The layer consisting of a silver-zinc alloy contg. 28-40% weight fraction zinc is formed on the substrate and the oxide film is formed on said layer by heating the layer in the air for 10<-4>exp(8376/T) time at a temp. TK. The flatness substantial as an optical recording film is obtainable if the time for providing the oxide layer at, for example, 500 deg.C is suppressed within 5min. The difference in reflectivity increases and the surface having the substantial flatness is obtd. if the time for providing the oxide film at, for example, 400 deg.C is similarly within 25min. The effective heating time for providing the oxide film is within 10<-4>expX(8376/T) at the absolute temp. T from the above- mentioned result.
