NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (Ar is formula II-IV). EXAMPLE:2,4-(Di(4-hydroxyphenoxy)benzonitrile. USE:A monomer for producing polymers capable of giving various polymers, rich in flexibility and having high mechanical strength. PREPARATION:A benzonitrile derivative expressed by formula V (X is F, Cl, Br or NO2) is reacted with an alklai metal salt expressed by the formula MO- Ar-OM (M is alkali metal) in a mixed solvent, e.g. sulfolane-toluene, etc., at 100-250 deg.C for 1-6hr to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I. The reaction is carried out by using 2-5mol, based on 1mol compound expressed by formula IV, alkali metal salt.
