PURPOSE:To recognize the precise formation in respective parts of an object by providing plural window areas and individually matching a reference pattern to a picture in the respective window areas. CONSTITUTION:An EXOR gate 12 discriminates the coincidence of a binary picture pattern of the object 5 from a binarization circuit 7 with the reference pattern from a reference memory 10 and applies a decision output to one input terminal of AND gates 16, 22. Window area information from window memories 15, 21 respectively is applied to the other input terminal of the AND gates 16, 22. Accordingly, the gates 16, 22, when the window area information is applied, output the number of dissident picture elements of the output of the EXOR gate 12. The number of the dissident picture elements is counted respectively by picture element counters 17, 23. A CPU30 decides, based on the counting output of the counters 17, 23, the coincidence and the dissidence of the reference pattern and the binary picture pattern. Thereby, the precise formation in the respective parts of the object can be recognized.
