PURPOSE:To enhance the effect of cooling, by supporting a bar through each of passages of cooling plates of a cell stack out of contact with the inside surface of the passage, and gradually increasing the diameter of the bar from the inlet port of the passage toward the outlet port thereof, to heighten the capacity of heat exchange through the inside surface of the passage and increase the difference of the temperature of cooling gas between the inlet and outlet ports of the passage. CONSTITUTION:In a cell stack 1, a large number of unit cells 2 and gas separation plates 3 are alternately piled up and a cooling plate 4 is interposed for every several unit cells. Each cooling plate 4 consists of two split portions electrically coupled to each other so that a large number of cooling gas passages 5 are defined. A bar 6 whose diameter is gradually increased from the inlet port of each passage 5 toward the outlet port thereof is supported through the passage. The bar 6 is made of a high-thermal-conductivity metal such as Alumite-coated aluminum and supported by thin wires 8 tightly laid between pairs of attaching pins 7 planted at the inlet and outlet ports of the passage 5. The cross section of the passage 5 is oblong. Since the bar 6 is supported through the passage 5, the substantial cross section of the passage is gradually decreased from the inlet port thereof toward the outlet port thereof. |
