The element comprises a substrate(1), a gas sensitive body(3) on the substrate whose resistant changes when the body contacts a gas to be detected, a catalyst layer(4) on the body including a carrier and a catalyst material containing Cu and W or CuSO4, and a pair of electrodes(2) connected to the body. The element is especially useful controlling ventillation systems in residential homes. It has excellent resistance to humidity, faster response, and release characteristics than conventional detectors using nobel metal catalyst.
