PURPOSE:To constitute an excellent reflecting surface and to form a long optical waveguide on a small chip by utilizing the cleavage plane of semiconductor crystal. CONSTITUTION:Light propagating in the 1st optical waveguide 1 travels having reflectivity or transmittivity based on the Snell's law basically in the crystal cleavage plane 2. In this case, the 1st and the 2nd optical waveguides 1 and 3 are constituted preferably at an incidence and reflection angle larger than a total reflection angle in the crystal cleavage plane so as to couple the reflected wave with the 2nd optical waveguide 3 efficiently. Namely, the incidence angles thetai and theta0 that the 1st and the 2nd optical waveguides 1 and 3 and crystal cleavage plane 2 contain need to satisfy thetai=theta0>thetat+theta, where thetat is the total reflection angle and theta is the deviation in effective incidence angle found by the light beam approximation of the 1st and the 2nd optical waveguides 1 and 3. |
