PURPOSE:To handle an information recording device as if only a recording medium without a defect were used for the information recording device viewed from a host computer side by providing a defect track substitution processing function to the information recording device itself. CONSTITUTION:If a defect exists on a track (m) of a magnetic disk 12 and a track (n) of the magnetic disk 12, the m-th and n-th cylinders having the m-th and n-th tracks respectively having a defect are not used to record information as defective cylinders. That is, the skip processing of the defective cylinders is applied in the inside of the magnetic disk device itself and the information is written/read as if the defective cylinders were excluded and numbers with brackets wave assigned to normal cylinders only as cylinder numbers viewed from the host computer.
