PURPOSE:To attain a stable and accurate image reading by providing a start mark at an original reading start position, and detecting the start mark utilizing a part of a photodetector out of a reading range for an original in a line light receiving sensor. CONSTITUTION:A start mark 8 is provided at the original reading start position. When a light source unit 9 is moved along the original, and it arrives at the original reading start position, the start mark 8 is detected with a start mark detection circuit 6 utilizing a part of the photodetector out of the reading range for the original in a line light sensor 5. In such a way, even when a dimension error or dispersion is generated at an optical part or a part where the optical part is fixed, the original reading start position can be detected exactly, thereby an accurate reading being performed.
