PURPOSE:To reduce irregularities in the positions of right ends of lines, by a system wherein in an auto mode, carrier return is not automatically performed in response to a key input of a space in a hot zone, it is judged whether a word key-inputted after the space can be printed in the hot zone, and when the word can be printed in the hot zone, the word is printed, followed by carrier return. CONSTITUTION:An electronic typewriter comprises a central processor (CPU) 31, a keyboard 32, a printer 33, a read only memory (ROM) 34, a random access memory (RAM) 35, and a word buffer 36 and a space flag 37 which are provided in the (RAM) 35. The word buffer 36 is a memory for momentarily storing character data key-inputted after a space on the right side of a hot zone. The space flag 37 is a flag set in response to a key-input of the space on the right side of the hot zone and checked when the subsequent characters are key- inputted, and is reset in response to carrier return.
