PURPOSE:To decrease a generating power amount, by a method wherein, during switching running of the number of water turbines for plural water turbines, the opening of a guide vane is used as the standard of switching the number of water turbines, and all water turbines under running after switching are set to the same opening as a value matching a total flow rate for running. CONSTITUTION:In a water turbine characteristics curved line diagram, switching running of the number of water turbines is effected based on the opening of a guide vane, being a standard during switching of the number of water turbines, i.e., lines (a) and (b) of an opening near an optimum number of water turbines switching branching line P. Namely, when, during running, a flow rate Q is increased to the guide vane opening (a), one water turbine, being heretofore under a stop, is added for starting, and all water turbines under running are set to the same opening as a value matching a total flow rate for running. Meanwhile, when the flow rate Q is decreased to the guide vane opening (b), one water turbine under running is brought into a stop, and the opening of the guide vane of the remaining water turbines under running is set to the same opening as a value matching a current total flow rate for running.
