The brake device comprises a brake mechanism 1 using two blocks 16, 20, 30 carried by jaws which pivot in the manner of a pair of scissors under the action of a control cable stretched between the jaws and a handle exerting a traction on this cable so as to move the blocks together and to clamp them mutually in contact with the rim of the wheel. According to the invention, the device comprises an adjustment mechanism 14, 18, 19, 52, 57, 70 integral with the brake which, beyond a predetermined deceleration threshold of the bicycle, automatically causes a limited separation of the blocks, thereby preventing the wheel from locking. <IMAGE>
