1,224,338. Metal casting lubricant; hydrogenating mineral oil. SINCLAIR OIL CORP. 25 Nov., 1968 [24 Nov., 1967], No. 55800/68. Headings C5E and C5F. A lubricating composition for continuous casting of metals comprises 95-40 wt. per cent of a hydrocarbon oil of viscosity at least 100 SUS at 100‹ F. having a carbon residue of below 0À1% (Ramsbottom) and an aromatic content below 1%, and 5-60% of a polymer of a C 2 -C 24 aliphatic mono-olefin, said polymer having a MW of 300-3000 and being soluble in the hydrocarbon oil. Preferably the olefin is butene. or isobutylene. The hydrocarbon oil may be prepared by hydrogenating a distillate mineral lube oil feedstock in a dual-catalytic stage system, the first stage employing a sulphur resistant hydrogenation catalyst at 600-750‹ F. and the second stage employing- a Pt-group metal catalyst at 450-700‹ F. Preferred catalysts are (1) Ni or Co and Mo supported on Al 2 O 3 (2) Pt on Al 2 O 3 . |
