PURPOSE:To select automatically a combination which has conformed with a target color, by providing a color space having three coordinate axes of hue, saturation and lightness, and discriminating and retrieving by a computer to which color space area the target color belongs, by using a data for prescribing an occupied space area of a combination calculated from a color characteristic value of each color material. CONSTITUTION:First of all, a three-dimensional color space consisting of three coordinate axes of hue, saturation and lightness, or hue, saturation and color density, which are determined is set. Subsequently, with regard to each of a combination to be applied to computer color matching, a data for prescribing a three-dimensional color space area (combined color solid) occupied by the respective combinations is derived in advance by a calculation from a color characteristic value of each color material being a component of the combination. Next, by using a data base which has recorded those data, to which combined color solid a target color belongs is discriminated by a computer, and a combination which has conformed with the target color is retrieved and selected automatically.
