For denitrogenating exhaust gases, it is known to add ammonia to the gases from systems in which materials are thermally treated or also combusted before said exhaust gases are emitted into the atmosphere. The production of ammonia and also the transformation of the nitrogen oxides contained in exhaust gases into harmless exhaust gas components are, however, associated with a high energy outlay. According to the invention, however, an energy-saving and therefore especially economical denitrogenation of exhaust gases is achieved in that, in a cement burning system (1, 2, 3, 4), substances are added to the calcium carbonate-containing material which form ammonia under the effect of heat and/or catalyst and the components of which correspond essentially to the thermally treated materials. <IMAGE>
