The movement of jockey rollers for regulating the transport speed of an endless material in order to keep a predetermined tensile stress in this material constant is conventionally influenced by pneumatically generated weight loading and by hydraulic damping. In order to avoid any uncontrolled movements of the jockey roller in the event of extremely high tensile stresses, according to the invention the entire control of the movement of the jockey roller is regulated hydraulically, for which purpose a hydraulic pump driven by an electric motor supplies a control unit having a number of hydraulic valves continuously with the hydraulic fluid, as a result of which all changes in the loading and the movement processes on the jockey roller are possible, even during operation. <IMAGE>
