PURPOSE:To discriminate whether a measured chromatic value is within a permissible range or not with regard to a standard chromatic value by providing a memory means to store the standard chromatic value in the prescribed color space, setting means for setting the permissible range for the standard chromatic value, discriminating means, etc. CONSTITUTION:This measuring instrument has a photoelectric conversion part 100 and a data processing part 200. The light from the standard sample is separated to basic color components and photoelectrically converted by the conversion part 100; the information expressing the basic component is further converted to the color space in the processing part 200. The standard chromatic value is stored in a RAM7 by measurement or manual setting using numeric keys and the permissible range with regard to the standard chromatic value is set by the setting means. The permissible range is indicated by, for example, the distance in the color space. The discriminating means calculates the distance in the color space between the chromatic value of the sample to be measured determined by the conversion part 100 and the processing part 200 and the standard chromatic value and discriminates whether the distance is larger than the set distance or not. The result of the discrimination is subjected to display 10, etc.
