A retaining device chiefly for scanning tools, which operate in a contactless manner with a light beam, for three-dimensional measuring and marking-out devices is proposed. The retaining device has a rotary head which can rotate about an axis of rotation, and, on the rotatable rotary head part, a pivoting holder which has a quarter-circle arcuate guide and a carriage guided relative thereto. The scanning tool is always guided by means of the pivoting holder along the segment of a track, which is in the shape of a circular arc and whose geometrical centre lies on the axis of rotation, in a constant radial alignment in such a way that scanning is performed at least approximately in the direction of the normal to the workpiece surface, and the most accurate measurement result is delivered thereby.
