An industrial robot with an arm pivotable about at least two parallel pivot axes carries at its free end a holding element (8, 9) which can be reciprocated to a limited extent in a direction parallel to the pivot axes and can also be rotated about its centre axis (8') running parallel to the pivot axes. Fastened to the holding element (8, 9) is a tool holder (12, 15) which is pivotable about a first axis (13) running at right angles to the pivot axes. <IMAGE>
