PURPOSE:To obtain doubled resolution with same memory capacity by thinning out video signals and recording still pictures onto plural tracks in different time to apply band-compression to a spatial frequency to make it into a half and to simplify the circuit constitution. CONSTITUTION:Only an odd-th order of picture element is read on an odd-th order field scanning line and only an even-th order of picture element is read in an even-th order field scanning line and they are recorded on a recording medium, e.g., a magnetic tape. In case of readout from a frame memory, the picture element is read alternately from the odd-th order field scanning line and the even-th order of field line in the unit of picture elements. That is, the video signal corresponding to a picture element of the even-th order field scanning line next to the odd-th order field scanning line is interpolated to the video signal corresponding to the picture element absent from the odd-th order field scanning line, and the picture element of the next odd-th order is interpolated to the even-th order field scanning line conversely. The correlatively is very excellent in the thinning out and the resolution is improved without deteriorating the S/N.
