PURPOSE:To suppress the generation of vertical moire by modulating the 1st color light by a spatial frequency of horizontal 2-picture-element period of a solid-state image pickup element, modulating the 2nd color light by a 4-picture- element period of spatial frequency and modulating the 2nd color light in opposite phase with the 2nd color light. CONSTITUTION:After an optical image incident via an image pickup lens 1 passes through an optical crystal filter 2 to reduce moire, the image is formed on the light receiving surface of an image pickup element 3 through a mosaic filter. An image pickup element 3 outputs the signal of each picture element by charge coupling transfer. For example, with the horizontal drive frequency of 4fsc (fsc is a chrominance subcarrier frequency) and horizontal picture elements and 500 vertical picture elements, the modulation component G is modulated by 2fsc and modulation components R, B are modulated by fsc. The moire for R, B components is caused at the locations of fH/2 and its multiple in horizontal direction and at the locations of fv and its multiple in vertical direction. Since the moire in the vertical direction is less, it is not required to locate an optical crystal filter in the vertical direction and the picture with less moire is obtained without decreasing the vertical resolution.
