A binder has a non-metallic cover and a binding assembly for retaining sheets, the assembly being attached to the inner surface of the cover by a plurality of prongs that are each stamped or punched out of a metal attachment plate. Each prong is generally triangular in shape and is curved throughout its length and terminates in a sharpened tip. Each prong has a length at least two times greater than the thickness of the cover, and the prongs are confined wholly within the thickness of the cover. The metal attachment plate may comprise a portion of a hinge assembly, or may be a binding plate attached to the rear face of a toggled binder mechanism.
