PURPOSE:To obtain a polyamide-carboxylic acid as a precursor for a polyimide excellent in a balance between heat resistance and moldability, having a specified structural formula. CONSTITUTION:A sulfonyl group-containing polyamide-carboxylic acid comprising repeating units of formula I [wherein Ar is a group of formula II, Y is a bond, oxygen, sulfur, SO2, CH2 or the like, Ar' is a group of formula III or IV, R is H or methyl, X is a bond, oxygen, sulfur, SO2, CH2 or the like and Ar'' is a group of formula V or the like) and having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.1-10.0dl/g.
