PURPOSE:To detect the position of an article in many positions using a small number of photo-detectors by introducing light to said photo-detectors through a light transferring means consisting of plural light introducing bodies which are so provided as to be opposite to each detecting position. CONSTITUTION:H signals and L signals outputted from photodetectors 15A, 15B, 15C are amplified through amplifiers 16A, 16B, 16C respectively, and inputted into a signal processing circuit 17. The signal processing circuit 17 specifies the whereabouts of a sheet material 11 among seven detecting positions A-G based on the combination of said H signals and L signals. That is, since the relation of combinations between optical fibers 14a-14l and the photo-detectors 15A, 15B, 15C is changed for each of the detecting positions A-G, the combination of H and L signals which are inputted from the photo-detectors 15A, 15B, 15C into the signal processing circuit 17 is varied depending on the position in which the sheet material 11 is detected.
