PURPOSE:To make an automatic transmission compact, by axially juxtaposing a one-way clutch with respect to a planetary gear unit in such a manner that the one-way clutch is located inside a ring gear, and arranging a brake and a hydraulic actuator on both the axial ends of the one-way clutch. CONSTITUTION:A one-way clutch F2 is axially juxtaposed to a planetary gear unit 3, and is located inside an extension line of a ring gear R2 of the planetary gear unit 3. A brake B3 and a hydraulic actuator 60 for operating the brake B3 are so arranged as to interpose the one-way clutch F2 therebetween. A comb- like arm 60a is provided outside the one-way clutch F2, and a return spring 64 is interposed therebetween.
