In the cleaning of contaminated gas the gas is passed upwardly through a pair of curved tapering nozzles 54 extending through a bath of liquid supported in plate 38 and arranged so that liquid is entrained by the gas leaving the nozzles and so that the streams of gas and liquid impinge upon one another above the level of liquid in the bath and below a bed of contact elements which removes liquid from the gas. The gas is sprayed with liquid from sprays 62 as it enters the nozzles and the upper ends of the nozzles may have pairs of vanes 60 to guide liquid prior to entrainment in the gas. In a modification a single nozzle with a vertical axis (Fig. 5, not shown) may be employed, the stream of gas and liquid formed at the nozzle outlet being directed against a.U-sectioned baffle.
