PURPOSE:To shorten the time required for the formation of a retrieving picture and to retrieve required document and page within a short period by separating a diagram and list on the document by a simple method an contracting the separated contents to form a retrieving picture. CONSTITUTION:In case of separating a diagram area in a document, an objective page 11 is divided into a black line area (black) and a white line area (white). The continuous number of black lines in scanning lines is checked, and when the continuous number is a prescribed value or above, the black line area is regarded as the diagram/list area. The graphic/list area is separated and contracted, many diagrams are simultaneously displayed on a display and an objective page including the diagram can be accessed by retrieving one of the many diagrams with a light pen or the like. When the document is MH-coded, only an MH-code line separation code and the code of all white line are detected to attain the separation of the diagram/list area.
