PURPOSE:To obtain a high-purity PPS having extremely low bonded chlorine content and low Na content, by heat-treating PPS and a disulfide in a solvent. CONSTITUTION:A polyphenylene sulfide having a bonded chlorine content of <=500ppm, preferably <=100ppm can be produced by heating a polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), a disulfide of formula (R and R' are hydrocarbon residue or heterocyclic compound residue; A is carboxyl, hydroxyl, amino or nitro; x and y are 0-6) and optionally a base in a solvent capable of dissolving the PPS (preferably at 200-260 deg.C for 1-4hr). The disulfide is e.g. phenyl disulfide, 2-(4'-morpholinodithio)benzothiazole, etc., and the solvent is e.g. N- methylpyrrolidone, N-ethylpyrrolidone, etc.
