NEW MATERIAL:The 13-methyl-13-dihydro-4-demethoxydaunomycin derivative of formula I (R is H or trialkylsilyl). EXAMPLE:13-Methyl-13-dihydro-7-O-t-butyldimethylsilyl-4-demethoxydauno mycin. USE:Useful as an important synthetic intermediate for 13-methyl-13-dihydro-4- demethoxydaunorubicin having strong carcinostatic activity. PREPARATION:The compound of formula VI which is one of the compounds of formula I (R<1>, R<2> and R<3> are alkyl; M is metallic atom or metal-containing atomic group) is produced, according to the reaction formula, by reacting a methylation agent to the compound of formula II having 7-OH group selectively protected with silyl group and desilylating the resultant compound of formula V.
