PURPOSE:To obtain high-purity phosphine in high yield by rectifying crude phosphine in a packed tower packed with activated zeolite. CONSTITUTION:Crude phosphine is gasified in a reboiler 3 and brought into contact with reflux liquid in a packed tower 2 packed with activated zeolite and thereafter condensed in a condenser 1 provided to the top part of the tower and subjected to reflux and also the impurities components are removed. In such a way, phosphine purified by performing rectification is recovered from the reboiler 3. Activated zeolite is preferably one or >=2 kinds selected from among zeolite A, zeolite X, zeolite Y or mordenite. The temp. of the reboiler is higher than the temp. of the condenser and the packed tower and is preferably the critical temp. of phosphine or below and the temp. in the packed tower is preferably <=-10 deg.C. By the above-mentioned purifying method, the low-b.p. components contained in crude phosphine, CO2 and H2O can practically be removed to <=1ppm, respectively.
