PURPOSE:To improve the heat resistance by dissolving nitrogen in a crystal in a specified weight ratio in the beta type SiC whisker used as the filler, etc., of a fiber-reinforced ceramic. CONSTITUTION:Nitrogen is dissolved by 1-8wt% in the crystal of the beta type SiC whisker to improve the heat resistance. As an appropriate method for dissolving nitrogen, carbon powder is incorporated into Si3N4 powder, the mixture is heated at high temp. while supplying gaseous carbon monoxide to decompose Si3N4 and to form a beta type SiC whisker, and nitrogen is dissolved into the beta type SiC whisker by utilizing the gaseous nitrogen generated by the decomposition of the Si3N4. Since the obtained beta type SiC whisker has excellent heat resistance, the whisker is capable of sufficiently withstanding the sintering temp. of SiC and Si3N4 when the whisker is used as the filler of a fiber- reinforced ceramic. |
