PURPOSE:To decrease widely the capacity of a memory device by utilizing the character of a general image that the same picture element continues continuously. CONSTITUTION:The first comparing processing means 18 compares successively the pattern of image data with the pattern of a coloring pattern table accommodating part 17, and the first symbol code corresponding to the coincident pattern is inputted to an arithmetic means 20. The first symbol code 7 is looked upon as one picture element of the multi-value image, divided into the block of an NXN picture element matrix, the average gradation is calculated and obtained for respective blocks, the differential calculation in the gradation of respective element pictures in the block is executed and the second symbol code is generated. The second comparing processing means 24 compares a pair with the table in a symbol table accommodating part 23 and the third corresponding symbol code is outputted. The average gradation and the third symbol code are stored through a transmission path 5 to the memory device in accordance with the control procedure by a control means 26.
