PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as an intermediate raw material for an improver for resin, a developer for heat-sensitive paper, an oxidizing agent, etc., by a simple operation in high yield and inexpensively, by reacting a phenol with sulfur dichloride in the presence of a halogen catalyst in a nonpolar solvent. CONSTITUTION:A phenol shown by formula I (R1 and R2 are H or 1-4C alkyl) is reacted with sulfur dichloride in the presence of a halogen catalyst (e.g., sodium bromide) in a nonpolar solvent such as cyclohexane, etc., at 0-30 deg.C, preferably 10-15 deg.C to give the aimed substance shown by formula II. The amount of the catalyst is 100-5,000ppm, preferably 500-1,500ppm based on sulfur dichloride and the amount of sulfur dichloride used is 0.5-0.55mol based on 1mol phenol. |
