[Also in Divisions G1 and G2-G3] Apparatus for examining a fibre which has crystallites in a preferred orientation, to determine the value of a mechanical property of the fibre, comprises an X-ray generator 14 producing an X-ray beam: 13 which is diffracted from a point 15 after passing through the fibre, the intensity of the diffracted beam being measured by detectors 23, 24, 25. As shown, the fibre is passed continuously from a roller 11 to a roller 12 and the detectors are arranged to move on a part-spherical surface defined by a dish 20 having its centre of curvature at the point 15. The movement of the detectors is controlled by servomotors located in the base 20, detectors 23 and 24 being movable along a fixed radius arm (22), detector 25 being movable along a rotatable arm 26, while the whole dish is rotatable about its centre. By moving detector 23 to the position of maximum diffracted intensity, and detectors 24 and 25 to positions corresponding to a predetermined amount (say ¢) of this intensity, and then measuring the respective angles subtended by pairs of detectors at point 15, or the centre of dish 20, the crystallite size or orientation is determined. From this information and from calibration graphs (Figs. 1, 2, not shown) an average value of Young's modulus for the fibre may be determined. |
