<p>PURPOSE:To enable easy diversion of the rack shaft of an existing manual steering device, by a method wherein a conversion mechanism, converting rotational movement of an electric motor into linear movement of a rack shaft is located between the electric motor and the rack shaft. CONSTITUTION:A pinion gear 12 is geared with a rack gear 10a of a rack shaft 10, and the pinion gear 12 is rotated through a pinion shaft 13 by means of a handle 16 to axially move the rack shaft 10 to steer a vehicle. A housing 15 having a chamber 15a containing a conversion mechanism 24 is situated in the vicinity of the rack shaft 10, and an electric motor 22 is attached to the housing 15. The conversion mechanism 24 is formed with a worm shaft 26, a ball 30, and a ball nut 32, and rotational movement of the electric motor 22 is converted into linear movement of the rack shaft 10.</p> |
