New catalyst obtained by reaction between a metal precursor, especially a transition metal salt, and a compound which is tetracyano-1,4-dithiine or tetracyanothiophene. The catalyst can be employed in processes for sweetening hydrocarbon feedstocks, either deposited on a support or in liquid phase.
