PURPOSE:To branch a grated index GI fiber at an optional lengthwise point without cutting a spacer nor a single-mode SM fiber by inserting element wires of the OPGW sidewise into an optical fiber compound overhead earth-wire OPGW insertion hole which is made semicircular when a branch box is disassembled. CONSTITUTION:The out peripheral element wire 11 of the OPGW 10 and the aluminum pipe 12 of an optical unit are removed to specific length and the spacer 13 of the optical unit and the SM fiber 14 and a GI fiber 15 which are supported by the spacer are exposed. Further, neither the spacer 13 nor the SM fiber 14 is cut and only the GI fiber 5 to be branched is cut an intermediate point. Then, the element wire cut part of the OPGW is inserted sidewise into the semicircular groove 23a of the cut GI fiber 15 and a fiber 16 for branching is also inserted into the semicircular groove 24a; and the spacer 13, SM fiber 14, and the connection point 17 between the fibers 15 and 16 which are exposed between the element wire cut parts are put in one half-divided box while supported by a holder. Thus, a waste of connecting operation is eliminated.
