When filtering slurries with membrane plates the charging operation, in which the slurry is already partially dewatered, is followed by the secondary pressing operation through the membrane. During this secondary pressing phase, the membrane is pressed away from the plate core by a pressure medium and deforms. The amount of deflection to which it may be subjected depends on the membrane material. In order not to exceed the highest permissible value, monitoring the deflection is therefore provided, in which case, when defined membrane-material-dependent distances are achieved, the pressure medium feed itself and/or a medium influencing the membrane can be controlled.
