PURPOSE:To aim at enhancing the availability of a magnetic disc recording and reproducing device, by providing first and second cartridge holding means which are adjacent to each other in a shifting section, and by making a new cartridge stand by in the vicinity of the recording and reproduction device when a cartridge is taken out from the device. CONSTITUTION:A cartridge supply conveyer 12 and a discharge conveyer 15 are laid above and below a recording and reproduction device 14, being spaced from each other with an equal vertical distance (a) from the device. A magnetic cartridge having been processed by the recording and reproduction device 14 is shifted to the right end position by being held by a second holding section 10B, and thereafter, a shifter section 11 ascends. Further, a new cartridge held by a first holding section 10A and taken out from the supply conveyer 12, is forwarded to a position where the cartridge confronts the recording and reproduction device 14. At this time the cartridge held by the second holding section 10B is made to be flush with the upper surface of the discharge conveyer, and therefore, the loading and unloading of cartridges may be simultaneously made when holding sections 10A, 10B are simultaneously moved leftward. Thereby, it is possible to shorten the total travel distance of cartridge.
