PURPOSE:To carry out the smooth and proper chamfering of a glass pane by moving grinding wheels along the rotary axis of a rotary table where the glass pane is fixed, according to numerical control depending upon the position of the rotary table. CONSTITUTION:A glass pane received from a station 16 is positioned and fixed on a rotary table 10, grinding wheels 24 and 26 are set to the initial working position thereof and the glass pane is subjected to rough polishing and precision machining processes with the turn of the rotary table 10. In this case, the turning speed of the rotary table 10 and the grinding wheels 24 and 26 along an axis directed to the rotary axis 12 of the rotary table 10 are numerically controlled in respect of position and speed, according to a program prepared to suit the contour of the glass pane to be machined. In this way, the grinding wheels 24 and 26 can be pressed to contact the chamfering part of the glass pane from a nearby radial direction, thereby ensuring a smooth chamfering process.
