Starting from an elementary laser beam, there is formed by parallel sliding a spread laser beam 13 of small thickness D which is made to pass perpendicularly to its principal plane through an object to be measured set lengthwise, the width B of the spread beam 13 being greater than the maximum diameter of the object and the position of any measurement point on the length of the object is determined from the instant when the latter penetrates into the laser beam 13 and from the predefined speed of the displacement which is imparted to this object. <IMAGE>
