A description is given of a lathe (1), in particular for machining rolls, composed of a headstock (13) with a spindle (15) which engages around the roll which is to be machined and causes the latter to rotate, and of two opposite tailstock centres (6, 7) which define an axis along which the roll (C), which is to be machined, is held. In this lathe (1), the spindle (15) is guided along the axis; one (6) of the two tailstock centres (6, 7) is mounted on a protrusion (17) in the direction of the other centre (7), the external diameter of the protrusion (17) being smaller than the internal diameter of the spindle (15) and its axial extent being greater than the axial extent of the headstock (13). The headstock (13) can thus be displaced into an end position in which the tailstock centre (6) projects out of the spindle (15) towards the other centre (7). The positioning of the roll, which is to be machined is simple by means of this lathe; moreover, the lathe takes up less space than analog lathes of the conventional type and it permits the machining both of the table (working surface of the roll) and of the necks (ends). <IMAGE>
