PURPOSE:To stably read an image by forming a passage of an incident light and a reflected light on a cutout formed on a part of a protector on which an original of a contact type image sensor slides, and arriving a light at a photoelectric converter covered with and protected by a transparent layer. CONSTITUTION:A photoelectric converter 4 formed on a transparent substrate 1 is coated with a transparent adhesive 6 using, for example, an epoxy sealer by screen printing, and a glass plate 7 for protecting the surface is bonded thereon. A groove 71 is formed on the surface protecting plate 7. That is, the groove 71 is formed on the row of the photoelectric converters 4, and formed accurately by photolithography. In this case, even if an original 22 slides on the plate 7 to cause the surface to be contaminated, the light reflected on the original surface passes a space 10 to arrive at the converters 4. Accordingly, the influence of the contamination is eliminated to stably obtain a preferable image signal.
